Connecting the Opportunity Dots Between Legacy Digital Challenges and Warp Speed Technical/AI Innovations

Business executives can’t imagine operating without laptops, the internet, cloud computing, and virtual meetings – and they understand that each of these has become a fundamental component of their business infrastructure. But surprisingly, these are very recently developed technologies – and yet even bigger things are on the way.

This has created a new feeling of uncertainty in the C-Suite – are we keeping up? What should we focus on next? Is AI an option? If so, which use cases? Should we upgrade our ERP? What should our hybrid work policy be? What else is out there that I’m not seeing?

In this seminar, UT Austin Professor Russ Finney examines nine different digital challenges that are currently top of mind for current executives, and he covers the newest near-term technological innovations that are directed at each.

Another wave of business redesign is fast approaching, and this one will blend structure, strategy, and tech-forward thinking to rapidly produce a modern, high-impact foundation for businesses in the future. From dynamic planning to multi-agent orchestration, connecting the opportunity dots will become “execution meets autonomy”.

Russ Finney is an award-winning assistant professor and the director of MIS undergraduate programs at The University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business where he teaches technology & business strategy. He also currently serves as the chair of the UT faculty council information technology committee.

In addition, he is also an advisory partner at several outside firms where he assists with research and client engagement projects. He is a former CIO in the semiconductor, aerospace, and financial services industries where he focused on manufacturing, engineering, defense products, core banking, and investment trading.

In 2016, Russ was named by Apollo Research as one of the Top 5 most highly followed US CIO influencers through social media (@rfinney on X). In both 2021 and 2023, he was named to the Texas McCombs faculty honor roll for excellence in teaching. He began his career working with Ernst & Young.
