When I moved to Austin I became a nonprofit, retail ED and spent 20 years nurturing and growing an amazing network. I began my community building there. I did not have a strategy but I realize now that community is one of my core values and I was just doing what felt natural.

We have all heard the phrase, "It is about who you know." And honestly this just fills my cup as a person. I am an extrovert, and being with people really lights me up. I do need downtime, but it is a quick turnaround and I am ready to be curious, learn, and be inquisitive with my people soon after. New engagements and interactions bring opportunities, learnings, inspirations, questions, maybe revelations and aha moments. You never know what is going to walk through that door. I used to say that in retail life and I say it now — you never know what opportunity is just a conversation away.

The Business Engine at Work
From there I moved into photography. I am still speaking with some of the same volunteers, shoppers, and supporters from those 20 years. We continued our relationships, we work together now, and it just keeps spreading. Referrals are gold and better than any advertising you can pay for. Whether it comes from a friend or a former client, a referral is someone saying, "I trust her with you." What I had been building without realizing was already working as a business engine. I just had not fully understood that yet.

Building Community Helps You Move Further
What I know now as I grow my photography business is how important it is to build community alongside it. Networking matters. And a human who genuinely cares about what you are doing and believes in your work is what actually moves the needle. They can be in a completely different country, state, or time zone. We get to build community in real life and online and both are very real. Screen to screen counts. You can grow your referral partners and your client base without ever meeting face to face and still build something meaningful.

Support Builds Trust
Learning what works and what does not is part of building anything worth building. My LinkedIn engagement pod was helpful but I wanted to do more. So I started something new. A business that takes the engagement pod model further. It takes place online but in real time. When I did a soft launch I understood immediately how much people wanted to be in each other's corner. Ripple Room Social Club takes that instinct and gives it structure. A small group of business owners meets online for one focused hour and spends that time showing up for each other's social media in real time. You grow your reach, you grow your network, and you have fun with others, building a weekly habit that compounds over time.

Technology can help make community building easier, more efficient, and more fulfilling. It removes the barriers of geography and schedule and lets real humans show up for each other in ways that matter. Growing your community is crucial to scaling your business and the tools to do it have never been more accessible.

Be Selective with Your Time
I do not think you have to join everything or be everywhere. Find what works for you personally and professionally. But do something that feels right. Make a friend. Gather an amazing human or two into your orbit. Show up for someone's work and let them show up for yours. Building community is not just a business strategy. It is one of the most human things we do. So start somewhere. Start small. One conversation, one connection, one space worth showing up for. Any way you can make that work for your business and your life do it.

You never know what opportunity is just a conversation away.
