Meet our Panel

Ann Funai, SVP of Engineering at Under Armour
Ann is responsible for all software engineering across Under Armour’s Digital portfolio, including Connected Fitness (MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal and Endomondo), Global eCommerce and the HOVR TM Connected shoe. In this role she provides leadership over engineering strategy, roadmaps, platform development and product feature sets working cross-functionally with category leadership, digital product, marketing and external partners to manage the successful execution of digital strategy.

Ann comes to Under Armour from her role as CTO at PeopleAdmin, a SaaS company focused on talent management for the education industry. In that role she led the architecture, development, QA, DevOps, security, IT and design teams. She was also the technical leader for the acquisition and integration of multiple companies, as well as part of the team that closed PeopleAdmin’s sale and merger with PowerSchool.

Ann has a B.S. in Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University, where she was also a member of the Women’s Soccer team, as well as an M.S. in Technology Commercialization from the University of Texas, McCombs School of Business/IC2 Institute. 

Ann was born in Cleveland, OH and raised between Cleveland and Binghamton, NY. After a stint in the Bay Area, she relocated to Austin and has been there for 18 years where she resides with her husband, a musician, and cat. Outside of the office, you can find her on a soccer field, relaxing with a sci-fi book or out at one of her husband’s gigs around town. 

Vanessa Bustamante, CAO at Epicor Software
Vanessa is the Chief Accounting Officer at Epicor Software. She began her career with Epicor in March 2016 as VP of Tax, Treasury and Real Estate. Prior to her time with Epicor, Vanessa spent 14 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP in the Mergers and Acquisitions group.

Vanessa has a wealth of knowledge and experience, particularly in a variety of tax areas including mergers and acquisitions, federal domestic and multinational corporate income tax, and extensive experience leading cross-functional teams. She has a B.S. in Accounting and Economics from Southern Methodist University and an M.S. in Professional Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin.  

Mei Zhu, Director of Engineering at Visa
Mei received her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and her master’s in Environmental Chemistry from Beijing Normal University. She received her PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry from Peking University and completed a post-doc at the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) in New Zealand. After moving to Canada, Mei made a career change to software engineering.

In 1999, Mei moved to Austin, Texas, and started her first job as a software engineer at a startup. Mei programmed for several startups through 2010 before accepting a software engineering position at eBay. In 2013, Mei joined Visa after the company opened their Austin office. She was the first employee hired for their Digital and Mobile Platform Development (DMPD) organization in Austin. Mei helped build a development team and was a core dev lead in implementing two key digital products: Visa Checkout and Visa Token Services. Some of Mei’s roles at Visa include: Lead Developer, Lead Architect, and her current role as Director of Engineering. What Mei loves most about her job is her opportunity to influence people, work with top technology, and deliver great products to Visa’s customers.

Cheryl Jennings, Engineering Manager at Indeed
Cheryl is a native Austinite and UTCS alum who's been on the tech scene for 14 years.  She loves leading technical teams and getting into the code as much as she can.  In her spare time, she loves to craft, tend to her menagerie of pets, and spend time with her husband and 7 year old daughter.

Meet our Moderator

Denise Lucas, Interim Director of Development Services for City of Austin
Denise currently serves the City of Austin as the Interim Director of the Development Services Department.  Prior to assuming this role, she served as Deputy Director of the Development Services Department.  In this role, Denise provides oversight and direction for the Building Permit Plan Review Division (Commercial and Residential), the Building Permit Inspections Division (Commercial and Residential), the Site/Subdivision and Environmental Inspections Division (Infrastructure and Environmental Inspections) and the Service Center.  She has served the City for close to 8 years, first as the Deputy Purchasing Officer focusing on Contract Services, Administration and Contract Monitoring and then as the Deputy CIO for Enterprise Application and Business Transformation Services.  In this role, she provided oversight and direction for Enterprise Application Services, Internet and Enterprise Development Services, Information Systems, Enterprise Applications and Data Services, and Open Government initiatives.  Prior to joining the City of Austin, Denise held various senior level positions in procurement in the private sector, high tech industry, manufacturing and professional legal services.  She has an M.B.A. in Business Management from St. Edwards University and a B.S. in Human Resources Management from Friends University.  In addition, Denise is a Certified Procurement Manager (C.P.M.) and has achieved lifetime certification status.
